Grantee Schools Child Nutrition & Wellness of the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has secured private grant funds to support expansion of Eat, Exercise, Excel (EEE). See the "Funders/Funding" tab above for further information about the organizations supporting this effort. In 2006-2007, using grant funds provided by the Mental Insight Foundation, KSDE awarded $4,000-$5,000 mini-grants to each of three Kansas elementary schools to assist with implementation of EEE. This experience showed that good things can begin to happen with only a small amount of money. However, a greater investment is needed to assure that EEE is properly and fully implemented and evaluated. Currently, a three-year grant project is underway involving the three schools listed below. Funds for this project have been provided primarily by the Mental Insight Foundation with support from the Sunflower Foundation, United Methodist Health Ministries and individual donors. During 2007-2008, the first year of this project, KSDE granted funds for 75 percent of EEE implementation costs with the schools providing 25 percent. In the second year of the project, KSDE and the schools split the costs 50-50. During the third year and final year, KSDE will provide 25 percent of implementation costs and the schools will pay 75 percent. The participating schools reported pre-participation data to KSDE at the beginning of the three-year grant period. At the end of each grant year, post-data is reported. This includes students' scores on State standardized tests, attendance data, disciplinary referrals, and physical fitness test data. The analysis of this information will show whether EEE can be successfully replicated. Results to date are very encouraging!
